The Maldives or Male is an island nation between the Minicoy and the Chargos archipelago in the Sindhu Sagar Sea of the Indian Ocean. It consists of a group of 26 atolls. It is situated south of India’s Lakshadweep Islands, about 700 km southwest of Sri Lanka. The Maldives includes a total of 1192 islets of which 250 are inhabited. The Maldives was under the Portuguese and the Dutch for a long time. It became a British protectorate in 1965 and obtained independence in the same year. The official language is Dhivehi. Adherence to Islam was made essential for citizenship in a constitutional amendment in 2008. The population is mainly Dravidian in origin.
